a new me

Greetings all,
Since i coloured my hair back to my once-natural-blonde for a wedding in June, i finally updated it this week.  Apparently i can get away with regrowth as my hair is still 'beige'.  I plan on maintaining this for my 20 year school reunion in October & once more for our big family Christmas.  Then, not sure, i am not into heavy personal maintenance - i rarely wear make up - so long as my skin is clear & i exercise . . . i am more concerned about how i feel than my appearance.
I went to a different hair dresser to the one who did my hair back in May.  I cannot rejoice enough about the difference in having a . . . 20 something drone on about her drunken weekend/ dysfunctional relationship/ car troubles/ FaceBook/ nightmare clients . . . in a trendy-music-blasting-salon where i try to hide in a trashy magazine, ONLY to realise the hairdresser is reading it over my shoulder too & commenting on celebrities . . . um, concentrate, you have scissors at my head??!!  Deep breath . . . versus an experienced 40 something hairdresser who listened to what i actually wanted done, sharing wonderful tips on teenagers & offer me a cup of fruit infused tea in a peaceful, inexpensive, Army barracks salon.  Did i tell you last time, the former hairdresser suggested i have a shot of red across the back of my hair??  I had to stop her with force, she was determined to update my look.
I only had 'half head' foils & not a hair cut, thus the scraggly bits on the side, i want some length for style options come October.  Yes, i want to look great for my school reunion.  My husband said it's the happiest he's been with my hair for a long time.  Bless his honesty.  The expense for this temporary hair measure was $70.  I had a quote from my original salon, who insisted i needed full foils, colour, cut & the whole production for $220.  I'm so glad i canceled & went the 'between colours' option.  I will admit, i asked my glamorous blonde girlfriends Tania & Tina for advice, they both said "be strong, tell them exactly what you want, it's YOUR hair."
So along with hair update, i needed a new script & frames (i have retired the Prada & updated them with Coach glasses.)  It's a new me, form the neck up.  I will look back at this year, turning 37, surgery on both wrists, 20 years out of high school, my husband at war for half the year/ living with us for the rest, a new family car, keeping chickens & ducks . . . as a really optimistic time in our lives which set us up for a positive future, not much about my appearance.
Let me just share a bizarre comment from a blog reader who met me in real life a while back, she said . . .
"i was actually expecting you to be uglier, as you didn't have a picture of yourself on your blog, i thought you were hiding something."
I know, jaw dropping weird, out loud, in person, to my face, at a market stall (that's my work place!!)  But damn it, it planted this evil seed that i too thought, hmmm, no personal photo on your blog, what do you really look like??  So i put a photo of myself on my blog side bar, saying 'may as well embrace the fact i am what i am' whatever that may be in a reader's eyes - glasses wearing/ beige haired/ unbalanced skin toned me, i'm proud to me, most importantly i'm glowing on the inside.  Love Posie

You ARE glowing from the inside. But that hair colour also looks hot. How nice to find a good stylist who doesn't charge the earth! :)sarah

Gorgeous (both you and the sentiments of this post). Did you get snow today? Very exciting...have a great weekend. (oh and I'll be looking out for you now in Gungers, I'll be the tired looking, unfashionable, non-coloured one!!!)Alison xxx

Wooowee! Love the cut and colour, just perfect on you! Gorgeous. And BLAH to that insanely rude customer/reader ... what was she thinking?!! xo

Have no idea how I would have reacted to a comment like that!!lol. We are what we are on the outside - and I have found it matters less as I get older. As long as our beauty shines from the inside I don't think anything else matters!! Your hair colour and style look fabulous, just keep on being you!!

Wow - that was pretty full on, someone coming up to you and saying that! I bet she didn't even think it was rude to say!XXJ

Love that hair in shades of gold..I need to revamp mine too as presently it is sporting increasing shades of grey, definitely non-sexy ones at that! Where do people get off at being that rude? Ignorance?

I've never put much value on how i look, i had a sister who was a ballerina & model with way too much emphasis on her looks. Then i wonder if it's because i married young when i was still thin, cute, naturally blonde & fresher looking, not that i haven't made an effort along the way, but i never had 'new date' panic to fix anything.
Yes, it was so confronting to have someone say that to my face, while i was working at a market, geesh, i don't think she thought she was being rude either, just how she thinks full stop. Some people!! Love Posie

NICE hair! I'm terrible at maintenance too, but with such a finite period to maintain the 'do, I reckon you can do it.

That's a seriously weird thing to say. I think you should have used the 'f' word in response - "You've flabbergasted me!"

Looking fabulous! But what's even more lovely is your attitude. Wishing you a gorgeous weekend :) x

What an obnoxious thing to say!! You look great:)

Oh man, the cheek of some people!

Love the hair, love the glasses, but I suspect that it's what's behind the glasses and under the hair that makes you so damn beautiful - that lovely personality and clever brain just shine through!

Where did you go to get it cut? We have an appointment at the new hairdresser at Majura tomorrow, my first cut in about a year. I'm equal parts excited and nervous... and so is Peanut. It's her first real cut ever. I hope they can fix the three years of hack work I've inflicted on her her hair! ;)

Did you get snow this morning? Amazing!

What a great hair colour job. What a rude customer!

Hi Jennie, love your hair and your attitude - and 'what the' to the comment?!? I too have been feeling like I need a change.. but in my case, a complete makeover.. and being someone who never gets pampered, wears no makeup and would rather have good skin.. I've decided to get my eyes lasered for my upcoming 40th.. that in itself will be a new me! Take care and have a lovely weekend :)

How gobsmackingly insensitive some people are. I usually wake up at midnight with the perfect response to such comments, dammit. Hope she reads your post and learns that you should put your brain in gear before your mouth.

Some people are just weird. I don't have a photo of myself as my blog until recently was exclusively about craft and not about me. Although I'm including more photos of us all now. And to be honest until recently I was about 12 kgs heavier and didn't like the way I looked in photos. Now I'm happier with myself and happier to share. And I love your hair too btw.

Nothing like a new do to make you feel fabulous. I recently had all my hair chopped off. My hairdresser was more concerned about doing it than I was. I'm going for a bit of colour next week, tossing up between magenta or purple streaks for something completely different. Not because i want to be young again but just to reflect me creatively. I don't have a picture of me on my blog personally I hate having my photo taken and I haven't seen a good one yet of me.

You look luscious lady.. and a woman after my own heart with the make up and exercise thang x

It looks Just GORGEOUS!!! I love the new look and I really love all the different colours in your hair - they do not look like re-growth, they look like depth and facets. I think it looks just great and you should definitely rock your school reunion. I know how you feel. I had to get up at a wedding, around the 20 year mark, and propose a toast to the bride and groom at my high school bestie's wedding, no husband coz he was working, so I was determined to rock that too. it is well worth the effort but you will do it effortlessly I am sure!

I LOVE your hair. Completely agree about going to the right hairdresser, I cringe when teenage girls try and engage me in "silly" conversations that I have no interest in. I'm much happier to just be left alone to read trashy magazines and drink coffee.

Love the hair - you look just like you did in 1992! I have always had hair envy of your thick naturally straight hair, very lucky girl you are.
I also had a hair cut this week - first in about 8 months as with all the travelling it is hard to fit it in. Learned my lesson - those of us without such thick hair need cutting more often. I had to have 4 inches taken off scraggly ends - luckily its still below shoulder length, but was a nasty wake up call!

Glad you enjoyed your salon experience - it's been years since I endured a noisy, crazy, hormonal salon!!!
My hairdresser works from home and it's a treat to catch up with her.
I love that colour, too.

I had mine done today (I have to go waaaay to often to hide those greys) - feel like a million dollars now!

baha! you make me laugh crazy girl! Love your hair...divine! I have not dyed my hair since I was in highschool! I'll just be a natural brunette until the greys start appearing! I've noticed your pic on your side bar for a while now...I love it! And I love your new hair-do! Enjoy,...glow from the inside and the outside xx

Love the colour!
And you do not look even close to 37! I would have said more like 27!

And I completely agree about hairdressers...I much prefer when I can just sit there, read a gossip magazine and get my hair cut...no small talk necessary!

Jennie,
I love your hair cut and the blonde. I think that most of us would have awful hair cut stories - when I was 19 I had a guy who was DRUNK cut my hair - he suggested and carried out a short cut across at the bottom of my ears and then two pointy things in the back. I was TOO young and TOO shy to say anything. And I paid for the haircut that took 6 mos to grow out. I would not do that now. I have more self-confidence. I think you raise a good point. Be happy with yourself. And go to people who have a lot of power (and having scissors in your hand is power) who will listen.

very nice! Was very spooky - the seven year old was asking me for more food whilst looking over my shoulder while I read your post and she asked (of the last photo) "Is that you mum?". Spooky looks just like me. And needless to say 1. Love the length 2. love the colour 3. love that you don't wear makeup all the time 4. love the specs.

Loving it! I recently went to the hairdresser after 12 weeks to get my colour done, and still only went for half a head of foils with the blonde to cover the roots (and greys!) and it was enough. Sure, it did cost me over $100, but I am happy to pay that once every 12 weeks as I spend nothing else on anything beauty related. Loving the glasses too! xx

And publically bashing the girl for what could have been purely foot in mouth is ok?? You said she reads here, she will see this and everyone else's comments. Don't bully her for a thoughtless moment. Put yourself in her place, stuffed up in front of someone who she admires and then gets publically flogged by said person. It's not high school ladies. Be nice, give the benefit of the doubt.

Pam, this was years ago, she had zero fear of what she was saying to me, nor the implications it might have made me felt. I didn't believe i needed to go into detail about how cold, callous & hurtful this blog reader meant what she said to hurt. I have no fear of upsetting her, compared to what she said to me at my place of work. This is not high school by saying it years later on my blog, i don't care for a reader like her in my life. Public flogging or bullying her, hardly, she was & remained anonymous, just like your comment, untrackable, so why bother?? I totally stand by what i said & the other 40+ commenters - who i care about - do too!! Love Posie

Oh looking lovely in side bar and blog post!

I embrace it, it's part of the challenge for me, accepting and sharing. Not hiding behind the camera all the time.

Gorgeous hair colour and the highlights look great! I'm very boring when it comes to hairdressers - same cut and foils every time... except for the last time I went. I'm slowly going shorter and have decided I want to be more 'brown' and not quite so blonde. I found a photo of myself from 10 years ago recently and I think my natural more brown colour made me look healthier, fresher and gave me more colour in my face (although, the fact that I'm so exhausted these days and 10 years older is more likely the cause of me looked drained these days!!)

The hair dresser you've found sounds great - good balance of conversation, hair advice and pampering :)
