school reunions: do you go . . . will you??

 Greetings all,
I tossed my family in the car on Saturday morning & headed for my home town of Sydney, were i was born, raised, educated & met the love of my life.  Living only 300km away makes trips home easy, it's a very special city, it calls you home.  When you fly in from overseas, over that harbour - the bridge, Opera House, blue water, exceptional city sky line - i cry, i'm coming home.
It was my 20 year school reunion, from Ravenswood School for Girls, Gordon, a typical exclusive North Shore private school with famous, political & wealthy families who live in mansions with a fleet of European cars.  Some of us were further down the wealthy tree though & from big families who pulled resources to cover those exorbitant fees.  Many of us went to University in Sydney, so keeping in touch was easy, but it was the 90's & email wasn't common, social networks didn't exist.  I was married by our 5 year reunion & already had 3 children & a small business by the 10 year mark.  This time round i was expecting much bigger changes.  I was thrilled to recognise & be recognised by almost everyone.  It was like one massive networking party where everyone was the same age, had a similar background/ starting point & now we were catching up after 20 years!!  Yet it felt SO non judgemental.
I asked if we could do a school tour - see where our parent's money had gone - let's just say, wow, enormous architectural award winning buildings connecting the whole school & very sophisticated grounds.  My nieces went there & it's not dissimilar to my eldest daughter's ladies college here, however, to my school friends who hadn't ventured into 'today's modern school' with cafes, barristers, performance auditoriums & flexible learning centres . . . they were amazed!!
The school tour was a fantastic ice breaker, 40 girls came along & lots of the squealing, hugs & chatter started early.  At the reunion venue, another 40 girls joined us, commence more screaming, laughter & sheer joy to see each other.  Everyone was so happy, upbeat & the atmosphere electric.  I made a speech: to recognise how special our year was & i really knew how lucky we were, as the mummy of a high schooler now, we were a fantastic bunch of girls.  My sister had an awful year group, she'd never ever want to attend a reunion.  It was evident with the number of girls who came along, that we thoroughly enjoyed most of our school years.  Some were boarders, others started in preschool - that's a lot of time together!!
There was a genuine mix of occupations, mothers, business leaders, single girls & most interesting - so many of us have completely changed our paths, due to discovering the real world, or motherhood, or a passion to do something more meaningful.  Remember i was on the path to be a forensic scientist, before it was CSI prime time cool.  Some girls had lost children, divorced, remarried, parents had passed away . . . they were honest & brave.  My parents were over involved in my life - car pooling, parties, sports - so lots of girls asked after them.  I was telling my father today, he remembers ALL of my friends, he was so thrilled they were interested.  They were of course, devastated to hear my mother has Alzheimer's & is a shell of the former loving, home baking, wonderful mother she was.
I was reunited with my best friend from year 6, now living in Cairns - would you believe we're holidaying in the exact same place at Christmas??  I can't wait to meet her family.  We were inseparable, then she moved & changed schools, we lost contact.  My two best buddies from middle high school abandoned me for Geelong Grammar, i finally saw them again.  Now we were really up to mischief back in year 10, so to find they are mothers, one's a journalist, the other a school teacher (in my brother's suburb!!) i nearly died.  They can still party though!!  I found a few girls were living here in Canberra, alas, lots of girls i adored didn't come, many were overseas.  I was shocked to see one of the most glamorous girls now has a chronic pain condition & has lost her shine.  Still lovely & chatty, has a beautiful family & lives all over the world, but i wanted to talk to her for hours, see if there was anything i could do to help.  Is the biggest female-faux-pas turning up in the same outfit as someone else??  No way.  The girl i've known since preschool & grew up one street away, turned up in the same blouse.  We just laughed & agreed we still had excellent taste!!  A few of us have four children, some have twins, one girl has five children & cleverly scheduled a 'make over' the day of our reunion so she looked a million dollars!!
I assume things started to get less pretty after 1a.m. when my husband collected me.  I don't drink but apparently i was talking REALLY LOUDLY & didn't take a breath the whole trip home from North Sydney.  My husband was impressed i wasn't carrying my new glittery high heels (thank you Alannah Hill, they were very comfortable!!)  Of course my husband knows most of these girls too, we're onto our 19th year together.  The general consensus was that 10 year gaps are too long, bring on the quarter-of-a-century reunion please.
Now most of the 120 girls from year 12: 1992 are on line, i can hunt them down & catch up.  I was really flattered that so many girls had followed my design career & knew what i was up to.  Is there any better feeling knowing people care about you??
Waking up on Sunday morning at my childhood family home in St Ives was really special.  It took a while for my husband & i to realise that one of my nieces has pinched my old double bed.  I love that my children can run around the same house & garden that i grew up in, i know all the great hiding places!!  I adore that handsome soldier has been part of my entire adult life too.  We ventured to his parent's place for lunch in Summer Hill.  It's my husband's childhood family home too.  We have moved 6 times since we started a family, thus our desire to settle & give them a place to bring our grandchildren home to.
Needless to say being up for 20 hours on Saturday left me rather drowsy on Sunday afternoon as we headed home to Canberra.  I filled handsome soldier in on all the finer details of my girlfriends' lives & a few mentioned "your husband is still hot" when they saw him at the school tour.  We genuinely had a blast on Saturday night, it could have gone on for days!!
So, school reunions, do you/ would you go along??  Is it girl thing??  Most of us have husbands who don't care about school reunions, they keep in touch with who they want to, a small circle of mates.  Clearly i love them & thoroughly enjoyed my years at school.  We know we got lucky with a great group - we were't cliquey & if there were groups, they weren't exclusive & i'd like to think everyone felt accepted.  Love Posie

i'm grateful for . . . 'the park of all parks, best playground EVER'

Greetings all,
Well you are probably getting to know what kind of family we are . . . outdoorsy, active & all about our children.  There are terms like 'unplugging', 'free range parenting' & the 'let your children climb trees' movement - or you could just bloody well raise your children how you were raised - without technology, with parents saying "go outside & don't come back until it's dark" & allowing them to use their imagination & siblings for entertainment!!  Doesn't that make sense??  It's free & you'll find your children at their best, it's the greatest investment of everyone's time & energy.
I'm not even going to tell you how high this branch was!!  I don't worry or hover over my children, even as babies - yes, they were exposed to parks as new borns & loved spinning, swinging & crawling around . . . they knew their strengths, they don't fall & if they ask for help, i explain they are trying to do something beyond their skill or size, i'm not giving them a leg up.  To us, the park is their natural habitat (read: Army housing usually has crappy small 'rental' style backgardens of nothing).
I love that i have a high schooler who still loves climbing trees . . .
& a non-Avatar fan squealing with delight that this was the Navi forrest . . .
it's actually the Cotton Tree Forest at the Pirate Park at Scarborough Beach near Redcliffe Qld, a short drive up from Brisbane & you pass all those Queenslanders to get here.
Very glad this girl had leggings on under her skirt . . .
she was practically doing hand stands on those big tree limbs.
They climbed so high & right up the top . . . is my husband!!
Our children started creating their own 'tree houses' & inviting each other over to visit . . .
i took 80 photos here, it was hard to limit them for a blog post.
This is the top of a cotton tree . . .
& the children worked out how to get down themselves!!
Maxabella Loves, this week I'm Grateful For . . . the most amazing park find in the universe (& we've been to Disneyland) we only dragged ourselves away due to aching hunger, it was the true highlight to our school holidays & best of all, we had no idea this park even existed!!  Love Posie

light fingered children

Greetings all,
We've been to Sydney twice in two weeks, we stayed with my parents.  Upon arriving home the first time, i discovered zillions of small Disney toys stuffed into my girls' bags??  They said Grandma told them to take him.  I explained my sister had collected them & they were not for us (+ i was turning out bedrooms, last thing i needed was more toys).  I bundled them up & returned them, done, gone, dusted, over.
So imagine my shock after bunk construction this afternoon to tuck my 3rd daughter into bed & finding this staring back at me from under her twin sister's mattress above . . .
there were more in a bag!!  Hmmmm, they knew they couldn't have them, will have to nip this in the bud as they've never taken things like this before!!
Bunk building, look at that girl go with the Allen key (i had the Makita)
this girl started off keen & interested, passing drill bits . . .
 then she got distracted . . .
making outfits for her new doll.

Back to school tomorrow, the children can't wait, they love school, friends, sport, languages . . . i love 4th term & the build up to the Summer holidays & Christmas . . . swimming after school + it's the ACT Athletics finals at the AIS this week.  Watching the Commonwealth Games, i wonder if my guys will ever compete??  Proud mama.  While they're out of the house, i'll collect up all the toys who don't live here & post them back to Sydney.
This term is very special as my husband starts 3 months leave.  He's all set to garden & take school runs, yippee + get me in shape as 9 months on my own this year, i haven't had time for Yoga or running.  We have to turn out the garage too, such fun.  I'm back at Shop Handmade tomorrow (fun fun fun) gosh i should be sewing, that Shop is such a success.Have a fantastic week, i'm off to a head start of happiness, love Posie

Canberra . Goulburn . Sydney . IKEA . Husband

Greetings all,
So i'm back in St Ives, again, these school holidays.  Have i ever mentioned my home town before??  I love it here, leafy, quiet, family, shopping, space, restaurants . . . i do love visiting Sydney.
On the way up the Hume Highway last night, we climbed inside the world's largest Merino in Goulburn & left with obligitory snow dome.  Check out that late afternoon Spring sky!!
you can only climb half way now, this was met with much disappointment
lots of giggles at Rambo's giant concrete testicles
Today i took the boy to IKEA for new bookcases, side tables, desk lamps, bins & round rugs for those bedroom makeovers.  He was brilliant, adding up prices, making suggestions, testing out chairs, pretending to use the toilets in the display bathrooms (that will turn you grey i assure you) & by the end, he had a lie-down-silent-protest (the best kind of demonstration of anti consumerism a boy can do).  He came alive again at the self serve check out - shooting that beeper gun at all the barcodes, brilliant stuff, speedy, simple, love EFTPOS efficiency!!
So tomorrow my husband will meet us in Sydney (yahoo) for dinner, ahhhh, on his way back from Brisbane with his Jeep & i'm kind of hoping he'll take a child or 3, a side table or 3, a desk lamp or 3 . . . those bookcases require 3 rows, ooppss.  We could drive home with our heads to one side??  Non??  I love travelling with the children, they are my company & i don't know how to work the iPod in those 'radio dead zones' without them, so i might keep a few for conversation value.
I've never driven in convoy before, i expect to be assessed.  Handsome soldier is a professional driver of all things from scooters to tanks!!  It's only 3 hours & with the promise of finishing off the childrens' bedrooms (their furniture has arrived while i'm not there) we have things to do before school resumes Monday morning so we're heading off early.
Have lovely weekends, love Posie

funeral, presents, movie, party, earrings & flash back in Sydney

Greetings all,
We left Canberra very early for Nanna's morning funeral in Sydney.  It was a beautiful service & i think Nanna will love how my in-laws sent her off with gorgeous memories, smiles & heart felt tears.  Lots of talk of her famous apple pies, scones & rosey cheeks.  It was especially moving for us as there were so many photos of my husband's late mother, we miss them both.  The children were so well behaved at the service & burial, then wake afterwards, but some napped on the way to grandpa's, they were exhausted.
 morning fog over Lake George
i dressed the children in the car
My brother invited us around to his place for dinner, as always, incredible spread of dinner & dessert, conversation & laughter.  We brought the drinks & a red tea candle from Shop Handmade for his wife.  Our children disappeared most of the night with their 3 teenagers - cousins are awesome.
my eldest brother is a rocket scientist turned chef
hmmmm . . .  think the elbows need some adjustment
it was 10C outside but she still wanted to wear this dress

I love that my parents & father-in-law still live in the family homes we grew up in.  Watching my children this morning was a big trip down memory lane.  Jumping for lemons, mandarins & oranges, running down this passage, climbing on the massive rocks - big flash back!!  They are checking out the holes bandicoots are digging, much to my father's dismay & they are protected 'pests'.
 this bloke was zonked
gifts from my parents recent Queen Mary 2 cruise to Europe, West Indies & South America

We had big plans in Sydney to visit Corrie from Retro Mummy, have ice creams in Manly & take a ferry on Sydney Harbour, but the weather turned gloomy so we headed for the cinema to see Despicable Me (giggles) but at $79 for the 6 of us to see a children's movie, well, pricey day out, on top of sushi lunch, shoe shopping & our big girl getting her ears pierced - we made her wait until the last term before high school.  She was very brave, i loved that she asked if daddy could hold her hand, i could see it really hurt.
Tonight we celebrate my husband arriving 'home' a whole week ago.  So far he's spent 2 days in Brisbane & 3 days in Sydney . . . he's off tomorrow for a week in Brisbane . . . we're very patient for him to actually be on leave with us in Canberra properly!!  Off to cuddle him now & hope this uploads as we're on 1990 internet speed for the next week, thanks so some huge software download??  Oh well, i'm redecorating the children's rooms this week so best not to be distracted by blogs & the outside world while i'm swapping all 4 children into different rooms with a complete overhaul & clean!!Have a great week everyone, love Posie
