things i'm loving . . . 'the mighty Queenslander'

Greetings all,
I have always been a big fan of the stunning Queenslander style of home.  To me it's architecture at it's most functional & stand out beautiful.  It's not an entirely unique style of home to suit tropical/ sub tropical climates, similar styles are found around the equator, but in Queensland, they reign supreme.  My husband patiently stopped the car every few hundred metres along the 'Moreton Bay Tourist Drive' around the Sandgate-Redcliffe area, north of Brisbane, so i could take these snaps.  Poor bloke, with me thrusting my breasts across him to lean out his window to snap yet another image of a house.  He wasn't complaining, tee hee.

Look at the stairs, the balcony, the gates!!
Clever way of controlling the breeze, with shutters.
These are all along the foreshore, nothing blocking their view of the beach across the road.
So many different ways with paint colour combinations . . .
 & stunning gardens!!
Even multi level Queenslanders don't look McMansion, just grand!!
I think the wrap around verandah is a must though.
 Why not buy one today??
Add a jacaranda tree, it's the perfect family home.
Then there are monoliths of buildings like this, all i could think was "too much money" & the old cliche of "money doesn't buy you style".  I'm sure the owners LOVE it & have amazing views, but me, i'm old school quaint, i'd pick a Queenslander with a verandah & a rocking chair, every time.  The homestead we're designing will be based on a ground level Queenslander (raised country houses seem to have more snake sitings, eeek) as it's all about French doors & that wrap around verandah for me.  Oh & a breezeway (an external hallway between 2 buildings of the same house) which my husband isn't sold on.  Honestly, he just has to say you find more snakes in breezeways & i'd scrap it from the design!!
To see what other people are loving this Friday, take a peek at PaisleyJade, love Posie

You know, a breezeway will encourage more snakes into the house Jen.

I'm with you on the queenslander, always stunning, classic & beautiful! Though, we stayed with friends at their place in cairns & I just couldn't get my head around the shutters that stay open & let all the mozzies & creepy crawlies in too!! I'm sure I would have to invest in the humble fly screen...Enjoy your weekend & thanks so much for your encouragement, it's so greatly appreciated, especially from someone so knowledgeable on the whole market scene!!xx

I'm with you, my dream home would be a queenslanders have so much charm and suit our lifestyle really well. My dream house would be either a queenslander or sandstone colonial with fireplace and definately a big verandah. We often do walks along the Redcliffe and Sandgate shoreline, it's so lovely and relaxing x

I love my Queenslander..and it happens to be a very similar design to the one my mum was raised in out in a very small country town out west! I would like an extra verandah though, that's the plan anyway. Breezeways are pretty cool..though down in Canberra..wouldn't they be more like galeways in winter??

I do love them! We often drool over grand houses like this in NZ.

Love the queenslanders - though I am told they are freezing in the winter (though that is up here in the darling downs, probably not such an issue in Brisbane).

Sorry to hear you will be sticking out the separation thing another year. DH got home a day early and Ginger was watching playschool when he arrived home - she waved and then resumed her watching - that despite all the tears we have had in the last couple of weeks over 'daddy' not being home:)

Oh Jen you make me homesick! And you pretty much drove right by my little house 2 streets back from the water in Sandgate, can't wait till we get out of cold Adelaide and get to be back there in that lovely sunshine!

I'm with you - old school quaint is perfect. If your hubby is anything like mine he doesn't mind a bit of breast thrusting!

We wvwn thought of buying and relocating a queenslander to our own block of anf, but once we started enquiring bit too expensive. Would be alright if you lived in Nthn NSW, they truck them there regularly.

love big wide covered wrap around verandahs.

Alos I do think the breeze way idea is a goodie.

have a great w/e

My Dad grew up in a great big Queenslander and our family has always been a fan. I remember sleeping on the verandah 'sleep out' when we were kids - the cool late-night breeze wafting through the shutters into the stiffling hot room! x

I love the breeze way idea. Just plant a little wormwood, that will keep the snakes away.

Gorgeous shots Posie! The Queenslander is indeed an impressive and grand design of home. I could get used to one of those myself. Though I am partial to a bungalow home... less to clean! ;o) xo
