i'm grateful for . . . 'my inner '80s release'

Well hello ladies, or should i say laydeeez??
My eldest brother's eldest daughter is having an 80's themed 21st party.  I was born in 1975 & can safely say i was spared the worst of the 1980's.  My big sister was modelling so i got her hand-me-downs & my friends would say "those red jeans are rad".  My husband remembers grey leather shoes & a matching skinny tie, shudder.  Even more shocking, he graduated high school in 1989 & was let loose in nightclubs wearing such fashion.  When i mentioned the '80's' theme, he suggested i swing by his parent's home to borrow his totally awesome leather jacket dude!!  After 18 years with this man, i never knew said jacket existed!!  What is next??  Sweat bands, leg warmers, a WHAM album??  He was still wearing hypercolour in 1994, it mysteriously went missing when we got married!!
Within minutes of tearing open the invitation, i was on line ordering Tshirts & $3 sunglasses for my children, having Pretty In Pink flash backs, Footloose was in my head & bad fashion had never been so much fun.  I rang my sister & was SHOCKED that she is considering not dressing up, like what, like not at, like all.  Not even a chunky lace Madonna tie in her hair.
I'm so very Grateful (hello hostess Lemon Rhodes) to release my inner 80's with a sense of humour.
Now i need your help, suggestions please, what do you remember of 80's fashion??  I'm thinking . . . strategically placed hair gel, bubble skirts, thick black elastic belts & fluoro colours.  One mum at school suggested anything flammable would be perfect.
Can you remember words or sayings??  Like the Tshirt above, "Say It, Don't Spray It".  We could dress 80's & talk 80's too!!  Love Posie

PS i'll be back tonight after the Handmade Market day 1 - wish me extra luck now, my EFTPOS machine has been corrupted (as in the date says 1975, a fine year, but not for EFTPOS) & hopefully a kind ANZ IT guy will come to the market with a new money-taking-machine, it's happened before at a market, he was easy to find, the ONLY bloke at my stall!!

Yep, I do remember the hair gel/spray, the neon colors (screaming pink anyone?) and the pink and blue eyeshadow (and blue mascara)... And I seem to recall that Mickey Mouse was on almost every sweather, at least here in Sweden.

Oh my - those were the days, haha! :-)

Without judging fashion (I can't bring myself to that, it'd end badly) I love the 80s. I'm not really a "child of the 80s" because I really was a child, I guess, being born in that decade but I still love love love the music! C'mon, Tears for Fear's "Mad World"? Like, a shockingly earnest text to a rather lightweight tune? Love the discrepancy, so relevant and meaningful.. *babbblebabble* ;)

I won't mention the exact year I was born, but I was a teenager in the 80s and absolutely LOVED it! I was more of a New Romantic fan, such as Human League, Japan, Spandau Ballet and Soft Cell. The style was 50's or flouncy white shirts, black leather trousers, 'pixie boots' and absolutely big hair! Don't forget Madonna started out in the 80s.

I still have my Datchet denim jacket in the cupboard. It has an ace printed lining and I think in a cpl of years Princess C-W may well be wanting to borrow it bc all of the fashion that is funky now is a complete echo of my teenage years.

How about 'Frankie Says Relax'? Or that 'Fido Dido' character? Big hair, big shoulders and there was a particular pinky-purple colour of sparkly lipstick that was a must have throughout the 80s.

Ooo, ooo, what about Adam Ant stripes across the nose and cheeks?

Oh, the 80s. Since I had half my teens in the 80s, I can't claim I don't remember it. What about the Out of Africa phase, when everyone wore safari outfits for about a year after the film came out (or was that just in South Africa?). I also had a turquoise crushed silk bubble skirt WITH matching oversize jacket (that you pushed the sleeves up on. Or legwarmers with little bobbles of wool all over them? Or those "Frankie says relax" t-shirts (when no one knew what that song was REALLY about...). And the perms - oh the perms!

I was born in the last month of 79, so watched my older sister go through 80's fashion nightmare. shudder....

80's is really the height of bad fashion and excessive fun. Just mix a lot of bright colors and that would already be totally 80's. Have fun! xx

I just love that tshirt, it's ace!! Hope the party is fun, seems to be a common theme these days. Remember when it was all 70's parties? One thing I associate with the 80's is BIG HAIR! Go crazy, have fun xo

I'm an 80's survivor, loved it, the music, the fashions and the nightclubs!! I think spiral perms, big hoop earings and big shoulder pads. Culture Club, Duran Duran and many others ruled the charts. Watch The Wedding Singer for some great ideas too!

Oooooh, 80's flashbacks!!! My parents owned a young fashion store all through the 80's so I was the very height of fashion (think brands like Cue and other ultra cool ones). Don't forget about Flashdance - off the shoulder raggy dresses and factory worker look. Fringed jackets, rara skirts, big shoulders, Jenny Kee jumpers and prints. Ken Done prints on clothes were big as well.

Lots of chunky jewellery and big dangling earings. High waisted pants and baggy tshirts as well.

Bright colours, big hair & double denim. Oh, I so miss my spiral perm just thinking about this.

Hope your day ended splendidly. May see you again tomorrow when I take Grandma for a look.

An 80's party sounds like a hoot!

I was fairly young but I think mum dressed me a bit yuppy. Esprit t-shirt really pale blue cotton pants and matching shirt a la wham I think. I remember pastel coloured knit sweaters draped over your shoulders and done up like a pair of socks. I remember the other girls all had Ra Ra skirts and I had none. And if you wore jeans your t-shirt was the same colour as your socks and the jeans were short enough that you could see the socks. But I was in love with punky Brewster, tie a bandanna around your leg and wear different coloured shoes...:-)

That husband of yours must have looked STUNNING in that jacket:) hehe
What can I remember - humm, Roller Skates, Hair crimping, leg warmers. Smurfs (what old is new again) and the muppets (what can I say - it was a goldern era of chidrens programs)

Oh dear having just celebrated my fabulous fiftieth with a 60’s theme! I have to admit I’ve lived through all the past decades Mmm and must say the 80’s were hideous high waisted pants with flairs bad big premed hair shoulder pads, Oh please I don’t want to remember LOL.

So what you have here is perfect my friend. You will have a great time mostly laughing at what everyone wears, I know I did.

Always Wendy

It was all about big hair! I remember getting a perm (and my hair was long) and using the essential afro comb to make it stick out as far as possible. The photo on my passport that year is truly ridiculous. Have fun. xx

Ooooh 80's! My teenage years. Your hubby and I finished high school in the same year. I soooo remember those skinny grey ties, preferably leather. All the boys in our year had them on for our Year 12 formal and all of the girls wore gorgeous shades of apricot, mauve, hot pink or bright sky blue taffeta with tuule somewhere for accent. Beautiful!!! Not! can't wait to see soem piccies of the 21st xx

That is going to be a great party! I was an 80's teen so many many happy and some slightly odd memories there! Hope the efpos sorts itself out! X

As someone who is a few years older than you, I remember the 80's as being about big hair, crushed taffeta or satin skirts, plastic jelly sandals, Choose Life t-shirts, leg warmers, fingerless gloves, black rubber bracelets (the more the better), fluoro anything, red 'leather' jackets with silver studs on the collar (think Thriller), bubble skirts, oversized t-shirts that wouldn't stay on your shoulder (thanks Flashdance) and lots more! And does anyone remember the lipsticks that changed color when you put them on?

Unknown said...

Aaahhh, the 80’s…big teased permed and crimped hair…bubble skirts, ra-ra skirts and don’t forget all the fluoro colours. Then there were the WHAM shirts that said ‘Go Go’ and ‘Choose Life’...

Love a good dress up party!

Have a blast! Don't forget the roller skates to accessorize the fluro outfit! I can't believe your sister didn't jump at the chance to dress up 80's style - I remember those times, she was so much more fashionable than us in the 80's. M
