what do your family & friends think about you having a blog??

Greetings all,
Busy with school holidays so a quick post's a good post right??
Here's a little insight to my brutally honest marriage . . .
Posie: "At Blogopolis, a mum with 4 boys called Kim from All Consuming blog, declared 'years ago i told my husband i was going to start a blog & he said it was the most conceited thing i had ever done.'  Do you think having a blog is conceited??  How you answer might be the basis of a blog post."
Handsome Soldier: "I'm quite happy for you to force your opinions on total strangers, it saves me having to endure all of them."
Posie: "Hahahahahahhahahahhaahhahaaaaa!!"
Explaining to people who don't blog or read blogs, is difficult, thus the huge success of a blog conference, we get each other whether you're a niche food blogger or dedicated to celebrity gossip & style.  I only recently discovered my in-laws read my blog, hello family!!  My family do not, they're just not on line kind of people - they get my agenda, it stemmed from my design business & for when my husband's away.  Anyway, i do understand Mr All Consuming's point, blogs can be me me me as we indulge in our passions.
Me, conceited/ selfish/ insular/ self indulgent??  After dinner the other night, just as i was ready to quit for the evening . . . my husband said he fancied something tasty, chocolatey, warm & delicious.  So i leapt up & started on an amazing recipe involving a stove, mixmaster & oven . . . 2+ hours later . . . i presented my sleeping husband with a double decker Women's Weekly family chocolate cake stuffed with cream!!
We're not conceited, i think we're rather generous with our time & energy, even if you have to endure some opinions along the way.  If you know Kim, she's a doll, the least conceited person on earth & an inspiration in life (as well as this post!!)
So, tell me, how do you explain to the uninitiated . . . that you blog, what a blog is, why you blog, & what do people think??  Or are you like me, don't bother!!  Love Posie

I don't try to explain, if they have to ask it means they wouldn't understand anyway. My family knows I blog but they don't follow it as mine is all about my passion for arts and crafts. My son and hubby usually roll their eyes at me when i say i' m blogging but deep own they know i'm happy and a happy mother and wife makes a happy home :-)

When I told my husband I was going to start a blog to let family and friends keep up with us on our travels, he said why don't you just email them? However over the last nearly twelve months I think he's starting to 'get it'. When we finally picked up the new caravan and towed it home a couple of weeks ago, he didn't put it straight in the shed because he said ' I guess you want a photo for your blog first'! :))

a friend one day in conversation said you know your husband doesn't like your blog at all.....so I said hmmm I'll have to ask him and left it at that. So when he came home I asked him.....he said I could care less but she thinks there stupid....this has been my only negative comment....my boys don't like to be posted and I said someday your wives are going to ask, why is it all about Mimi?

I have never considered writing my blog conceited as it was originally to share life with my sister in NZ. On the way I found lots of blogs which inspired me creatively, cheered me up and filled me with wonder and admiration. Others sharing their lives with me makes me feel privileged in knowing them.

PS...my family love it and it keeps me in contact with them all around the world.

I'm with you Posie, I don't tell anyone. I actually started blogging (partly) because none of my real friends are into craft/sewing, so I doubt they'd be that interested anyway.
Congrats on your 600th post - that's fantastic!!

i share the beauty i see around me on my blog - don't often share opinions. but i give a ton of my time to sharing other folks' lives via their blogs. i think that's quite unselfish, as most of us seem to be.

My husband loves me having a blog. He suggested it, actually. He's not exactly an "asking in depth questions about emotions" kind of a guy. I don't share much on my blog, really, but what I do share gives him insight he appreciates. He didn't know what flowers I liked until I wrote about it. But then he went straight out and tried to find some for me. He's lovely! Kind of wish he had a blog of his own, actually...

I don't tell anyone about my blog. I don't talk about it with my friends, though they read it. My mother reads my blog and enjoys seeing the children and seeing what we're up to. But since I changed my blog, none of my siblings read it which is the way I prefer it. The blog world can be very judgmental, I think that's why I don't tell people.

Sometimes it's nice just to do something for yourself. I do sometimes wonder though if some bloggers live their life first and then blog about it, or live their life in order to have something to blog about.

My family like reading my blog, they are in NZ so they can keep tabs on the things I'm doing, although my brother did make the comment one day that he felt a bit like a voyeur peeking into my life.

Except for a few exceptions, I don't mention my blog to the people I know in real life as they just don't "get it"

I don't bother. When people hear you have a blog it really is difficult to explain what it is. For me it's a bit of a document of my creative ventures and our family life. My husband loves it, and looks forward to reading each new post, especially the ones about our boys & family life. My family don't read it, except for an aunt living in Singapore..

I didn't tell anyone at first, but now my confidence with the blog has grown I'm trying to persuade my real life friends that it's the best place to find updates on what we're doing while we're overseas. My husband looks forward to reading it and my Mum is my greatest fan!! I have a long way to go until I've written 600 posts but I hope I get there! Congrats on a big milestone and a great blog!

I have two blogs, as you know. Cherry Red came first and those who really count in my life read it and enjoy seeing what I am up to or don't read it but still encourage me because they care. I tell people about it and if they don't understand - too bad, I know what a gift it has been and the wonderful people I have connected with because if it - yourself and that handsome soldier of yours are perfect examples. The second blog, Aussie Heroes is not all about me - it is about doing something for our Heroes and I am shameless about telling people about that because I am not telling them for my sake but for the sake of the wonderful men and women who benefit from it. I love my blogs and if some don't want to read them I don't care - the important ones do!

When I first started my hubby was rarely home in the evenings which is one of many reasons i started inbthe first place, but now he is home more the word "blog widow" has been mentioned on more than one occasion....

Hahaha Posie, I don't bother. I don't care what people truly think. I know that the members of my family that I am estranged with pop in to look at what their nephews look like. That's cool. And I asked my hubby if he reads it "no, I don't need to, you tell me everything you post". True. Motor mouth- poor fellow, he still cops it. I don't know why I blog except some days I love it and some I hate it so I go off-line til I love it again. Meanwhile I check out awesome blogs hence I'm here today! xx

I have friends who, like Henny Penny, think "the sky is falling in" if I mention Facebook.
They dont know what "blog", means.
