who do you think you are . . . the blog version

Greetings all,
I enjoy the television series Who Do You Think You Are?? where experts help celebrities track their ancestry . . . i find personal history simply fascinating.  My Australian side of the family goes back to an Irish convict stone mason who made good & married the daughter of the Governor of NSW & was land granted The Rocks on Sydney Harbour.  Oh yes, gimme some of that land now thanks, billions of dollars worth.  Hmmm, where did it all go??

When i swung by my childhood home recently, i quickly took snaps of some of the family photos down the hallways.  Here i am, aged 4 at preschool.  My mother perfected ill fitting frames for photos, please endure my pain.
My parents 1955 Christmas Eve wedding, look at my Grandfather Sidney on the right, so like Winston Churchill.  You know back in these days, there wasn't a wedding budget, everyone was poor, dresses were borrowed, people from the village helped with catering & flowers!!  It was all love.
My English farm girl Mummy met my Australian Navy Daddy 5 months earlier & he went back to his ship after a brief honeymoon while Mum became a Ten Pound Immigrant, sailing off to Australia to meet & live with his parents, whom she'd never met & didn't know if she'd ever see her family again!!  My father made visiting England & bringing Mum's parents to Australia for holidays, our family priority.
Look at my brothers, these little little boys grew up to become a surgeon & rocket scientist, now in their early 50s with 7 fabulous children between them.
My sister & i, at my wedding (i didn't want bridesmaids, but she dressed like one anyway) we grew up to become a ballerina & pharmacologist, also with 7 children between us.
Yes, my parents have a picture of my year 12 formal.  My boyfriend du jour couldn't come so i took my sister's husband.  He's French & i told everyone he couldn't speak English so he didn't have to suffer small talk.  We still laugh about this, 20 years later, yep, this year is my 20 year school reunion, i'm so excited.
The following year i met handsome soldier at Sydney University Army Reserve & married him in 1997 . . .
2 years after that we had our first baby & he went to his first war!!  Promise i'll show my husband's face when he retires.
 Then we had twins . . .
& when i fixed the framed picture of my "4 under 5", more photos fell out . . . look at my baby boy on the left!!
So there you have the modern history of Who I Think I Am!!  You should do this too, it was really fun.  Love Posie

I love this Posie, I've spent part of the week trying to track down a great-grandmother who left the family when my Gran was a wee girl. And the other part of the week trying to track down where on our property the 1876 school was built. Lots of fun! PS As an historian, I hope lots of people join in with you. We should all know more about who we are...

You need to preserve this kind of history for your children. I know the most about my Dad's mum and her family, simply because she was the one who talked to me about it.

What a lovely story. Your children will treasure it when they are older and can add their own chapters.

aaaah - the dress. I am more glad every year that you fell in love with it, so that it did actually get worn by someone who loved it and looked great in it.
More amazingly - your father didn't use to have a beard?? Truly?? I always thought he was born with one ;-)

This is a TV show that has not only held my interest over the years but prompted me to do some of my own genealogical digging too.

I love this sweeping summary of your very special, highly able, intelligent and good looking family.

It's a treat to see photos of a younger Jennie and that lovely smile that is definitely your hallmark.

xx
