Our Creative Space 'noooo, not my favourite dress . . .'

Greetings all,
This is hardly worthy of Our Creative Space as it's more a 'holy crap how am i going to save this dress' situation . . .
a funny thing happened in a public toilet last week (i loathe public bathrooms & this has only confirmed my negativity) . . . as i went to leave the cubicle, my favourite denim-goes-with-any-mood-colour-season-accessory-dress somehow hooked on the nasty exposed metal toilet roll holder & as i swiftly turned to leave the cubicle i heard this heart wrenching rrrriiiiiipppppppp.  My ONLY saving grace is that i had grabbed a paper bag from my car inbetween the bathroom & Shop Handmade so i could carry it behind me on the walk-of-shame back to Shop, where i promptly announced i had 'ripped the bottom out of my dress'.
I know, it's not even at the seam or in the centre - do i patch??  Repair??  Applique??  Turn my dress 'bottom' area into a feature with different denim pieces & colourful stitching techniques??  What to do??  I welcome your ideas, just know, i'm not letting this be the end of the dress.  Help!!  FYI Shop Girl Rachel pinned some fabric over my bottom to save my dignity & i had worn a trench coat that day, which allowed me to pick up the children from school & not flash my tights at any innocent children, phew!!  Love Posie

It always happens to the things we like best doesn'r it!? I would stabilise the rip first....some iron on patch/vlisofix? from the back. I think you could then design a nice applique to go on the right side. You certainly have enough fabric to choose from....LOL!

I hope the repair goes well, you must show us when you finish.

Cheers Lois

Maybe applique a little bird or flower over the offending rip...or patch behind with other patterned fabric and cut some away??? My sister once tore a hole in the hip of her swimmers at the aquajet in Coffs Harbour. When she got them home, she cut & stitched them into a heart shape, and then melted the edge with a candle to make sure it wouldn't run - it actually looked REALLY cool, and lots of her friends wanted to know where she got them from.

i would patch it with my most favourite, brightest piece of fabric!

Tough one to fix dude. Depending on how big and where it is, you may need to get a new dress.

I failed sewing at school (I know!!) - so don't ask me
Cute applique there and somewhere else random will work - surely??!!

Oh no. Hard to say without seeing more of the dress. Maybe some 'oriental' style fabric applique... not sure what design would suit though! Would love to see what you do!

It may just have to become your new tunic. x

I think I would go with your first reader's suggestion - stabilise and darn; then you can go from there. Maybe you dress needs to become an emboidered denim number. Repeat your motif all over so to take attention away from the tear.

Oh bugger. Last time similar happened to me I ended up repurposing the linen into my stash box. Not much help really is it? Sorry.

Oh Man! That sounds like the worse place you could rip your dress! I have idea for a fix, just have everything crossed that you come up with something to be able to salvage your dress.

Oh no! I hate when your fave things are ruined! Hope you can fix it. I hate public toilets so much and will hold on for hours rather than go! xx

yes, i would patch behind and then just accept that fact that you have now joined the group that get around with torn denim - and there are alot of them! just think, you'll be soooo fashionable!! loathe public toilets too, and my story is way more embarrassing. Just think....wearing a skirt - pull it down, only part of it floats up and i end up sitting on it....unbeknowns to me! yes, i pee'd on my skirt!!!!! At WORK!!!!!

much love
xx

I strip of contrasting denim all the way around or from top to bottom. I f you go all,the way around it could be a pockety apron kind if sashy thing. Or you could add a competely new skirt to it.... From the waist...

Any chance that some invisible mending powder would do the trick. I used some on a denim skirt after my big wimp of a dog tried to climb into my lap to hide from the vet and pierced a hole in the middle of it with his big pointy claws. You sprinkle the frayed edges and some extra threads with the magic powder then iron over and it kind of fuses the fibres back together. It's not brilliant but it does work. Then you just strategically adjust the length and position of your handbag.
