I read Beijing Tai Tai a few years ago, when i first met Tania McCartney. I went to her book reading & as i read the book myself, i heard her voice telling me her story, personally. It's just that kind of fabulous book. Now it has been relaunched with a fresh cover & extra content, the kind folks at Exilse Publishing have offered a copy of the new release for one of my lucky readers.

Me, well my favourtite stories in Beijing Tai Tai include . . . trying open a bottle of wine on a train journey, sans corkscrew; her little boy's first day of International School - still wearing size 2 underpants (i hear you Tania!!); & the hilarious under current/ parrallel story of the housemaid, sometimes sinister but always entertaining, always at the McCartneys expense. I didn't want the book to end, i savoured the last few pages, great entertainment for $24.95. There is also a neat glossary at the back with all the must-know terms for life in China. Yes, Tania thought of everything!!

Sounds like a great read. I got a laugh out of your small underwear comment. We got my MIL to look for underwear for Ginger in Singapore, thinking that perhaps they had something smaller than a size 2/3. They daid but given that sans nappy, her bottom half fits into 00 even in the smallest Mothercare size it still hangs off her tiny bottom:)

ReplyDeleteI've been trying to concentrate on sewing from the stash this year before we head off on the big adventure because there's only so much fabric I can take in the caravan! So reading has been way down the list but this book sounds interesting so please put me in the draw.

This book has been slowly working it's way up my To Read list for a while. Having lived in Singapore and Malaysia for a reasonable amount of time, it will be interesting to see how it compares. I suspect because it's China it will be quite different, Singapore is fairly westernised and Malaysia, well it's Malaysia :)

ReplyDeleteI have always been a book lover with at least a couple of books to read on my bedside able, but at times I've found myself starting a book, not really enjoying or 'connecting' with it and still persevering. During my current journey I've found myself asking myself why i waste precious time reading books that don't give me knowledge or enjoyment.

Sounds like a great read, especially for a Chinaman from Sichuan like myself who fell in love with an Aussie chick 20 years ago and followed her all the way to Australia. Having to deal with our cultural differences is a daily thing in our marriage, which can be both challenging and exciting.
