the unglamorous side of designing . . .

Greetings all,
Ever wonder how designer's really work in their studios??  I dream of having a beautiful big old vintage cutting table, suitable shelving & storage - i'm using up as much of my stock as possible so when we do finally move into our homestead, it's with a small stash of materials & clutter.  I have a fantastic studio, don't get me wrong, but i often find myself cutting on the floor . . .
I may be in my pyjama pants, in the middle of the day.  Ok, so if i wear a skirt on the school run, i can't get comfortable on the floor, so i change.  Like my new leopard print cardigan??  Another must wear for we designers in cold studios, the mighty cardigan.  Oh from that angle it looks more like leopard slug, sorry, just showing what i see!!
Truth is, i get easily distracted, especially when making lunch & picking salad ingredients from my herb garden.  I'll wander off & water the plants, play with my puppy & compost the willow-vine-crowns my children make.  They look so pretty but they don't 'dry' well, or i'd keep them as wreaths.
I'm a bit of a stickler for being on time for the afternoon school run, especially as our car parks at both primary & high school are hyper competitive, so i normally knock off early, toss a magazine in the car & read while i'm parked outside school.  My 4th graders can see my car from their class room & call out to me, it's so cute!!  They have a patient teacher.  Actually she often tosses forgotten lunch boxes & jackets out the window to me.
You might consider the lounging about on the floor cutting fabric in jammie pants a bit lazy, not a real job??  It's all about comfort & efficiency for me, steady production lines whatever it takes.  If that means hand sewing on the lounge watching The Hills on a Friday early afternoon, i'll do it.
Can anyone explain The Hills to me??  We watched it in Italy last year (one of the only English speaking shows) & i can't tell if it's scripted, acted, reality or why i worry??  I think it's real but my husband insists with the camera angles, it has to be directed.  I know, why does he care either??  We pride ourselves on loathing reality television but the fashion & lifestyle these young girls have, fascinates me.  FYI Lauren is my husband's favourite, she's so adorable & i simply don't understand Audrina, Heidi is beyond hope & why isn't Whitney on it enough, she's the most sensible one.  Love Posie

I do exactly the same thing with pick up. Gotta get there early to get a good spot! (not that we've started at the new place yet...!)

I wondered the same thing about the hills - strange reality!

And I go to work in tracky pants everyday so I know that how you look has no bearing on how hard you are working :-)
But being creative must be very rewarding!!
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog the other day Posie - it really meant a lot to me

I have absolutely no knowledge of The Hills, but I do know a lot about working from home in my pj's. Much to be said for it :)

Oh dear. Don't get me started. Ok....do.

The Hills is ADDICTIVE. It is definitely set-up, as in they'll say "ok, you guys talk about this" or "Lauren, go and see Audrina", but what happens when they shoot is down to the 'cast' themselves. Lauren is great and she's become super famous since. As has Heidi with her excessive plastic surgery (check this out http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/14/heidi-montags-10-plastic_n_423855.html). Audrina now has her own show. And they did a spin off called The City where Whitney was the star!! It topped The Hills if you ask me......

I'm a sad case knowing all this aren't I?? Sigh..... Hope it was helpful anyway!

OMG, I am so out of the closet now. I love the Hills and watch it all the time. I thought I was the only one. I have seen Heidi transform before my very eyes with her surgeries. Ha ha, I am a happy blogger.

Jammies are hands down the best thing to be wearing if you want comfort while crafting and my children are always complaining about the amount of space I take up when I use the floor to cut out on :)

i share the same feelings about The Hills. I guess it must be scripted somehow, perhaps half-reality half-scripted?

OK, I'll admit it. If there isn't a school run involved I ALWAYS work in my jim jams. (shhhh).

You are hilarious. When I work from home I get out of my pjs as I MUST go out and get my morning coffee or tea. But it can't be said that I look very glamorous in my yoga pants and old Uni jumper (which I may or may not be wearing right now).

I've made it a rule that I must have a shower and get dresses first, otherwise I'll be sewing in my jim jams all day.

Oh and I love The Hills! Lauren is my favourite, she's not as much of a trouble maker as some of the others. It gets even better when Whitney moves to The City and has her own show, that's when Olivia comes on the scene. I've never seen anything like her, well worth watching!

Remember i change back into pyjama pants when i'm cutting on the floor if i've worn a skirt to drop the children off to school - as much as i'd love to driven them to school in my jammies full stop!! Love Posie

I was crafting in my pj's this morning but it was only 7am! I am a fan of the Hills. It's a bit tragic but entertaining. Sad what Heidi has done to herself re surgery. I haven't seen any new episodes lately, is it still running? X

My hubby is was addicted to the Hills and was devastated when it ended. I actually found Audrina saved in our MyStar not long ago and quizzed (teased) him about it and he just said it wasn't the same.

You answered your own question as to why Whitney was hardly one it. It is because she was the sensible one!

Work in whatever outfit makes the job most comfy. In the nude if that pleases you!

Hills equals absolutely no idea what you're talking about! x

I was watching season 1 of the Hills and thought the same thing so went googling. Apparently it is partly scripted. But a very odd show....

I was a "nab the best spot" early pick up Mum of 4 too. My down time with a mag before the next 5 hour shift of total bedlam. Dont feel guilty.
Hills? Que?
